History of MLM, MLM vs. Ponzi/Pyramid Scams

Here comes September! It's BER months na naman! Hataw hataw na people, WAPAK! Payaman! Malapit na ang PASKO, dapat mas maganda this year TAMA o TAMANG TAMA?

Kaya, let's go back to business, MLM business here in the Philippines. Lately I felt my blogs were a little bit "straying" off the topic, which is Network mMarketing. So let's start the month right, and no better way to start than to go BACK TO THE BASICS.

What really is Multi-Level Marketing or Network Marketing? Time to set the record straight.

Most of us already have an idea or understanding about MLM or Network Marketing...

"Pyramiding yan! Puro pera-pera lang eh! Peramiding nga."
"Networking ba kamo? SA UNA LANG YAN!"
"Ah, yan yung home-based business. Maganda yan kasi pwedeng part-time lang at pwede din namang full time! Kaya kinakareer ko na."
"MLM is the BEST BUSINESS EVER! Legal na legal yan!"
"Networking is just like selling, it's just another form of marketing where people move the products, and therefore earn profits, instead of traditional middlemen."
"Networking ba networking? Di ba yan yung recruit-recruit? tapos dadalhin sa semi-seminar? Kaya ayoko sumama-sama eh, punta na lang ako sa Target-Target."
"NETWORKING NA NAMAN? ALAM KO NA YAN! Kalokohan lang yan, Madami na nga taong nasira buhay dyan! Mapa politiko man o pastor. Tsk Tsk Tsk."
"No comment.

The Ponzi Scheme

1910 police mugshot of Charles Ponzi.

"The name of this type of fraud is taken from the first truly infamous man to use the scheme: Charles K. Ponzi. In 1920, some years after arriving to the United States from Italy, Ponzi began his scheme. His claim was to be performing arbitrage with international postal reply coupons (IRC), used to purchase postage stamps.

Ponzi claimed that he would have money sent to agents abroad, such as in Italy, where they would purchase the coupons. Those would then be sent to the United States and redeemed for stamps of higher value. His claimed net profit after costs and expenses, and considering currency exchange rates, was over 400%.

However, after pulling in millions of dollars, it eventually became apparent that the investment plan was nothing but a fraud. It was uncovered that, in order to reach the level of investments that were made, 160 million coupons would have needed to be issued. In reality, only 27,000 had been. Soon afterward, Ponzi was arrested and indicted."

(Source: http://www.mijiki.com/what-is-a-ponzi-scheme.html)

Pyramiding Schemes

"As its name indicates, the pyramid scheme is structured like a pyramid. It starts with one person - the initial recruiter - who is on top, at the apex of the pyramid. This person recruits a second person, who is required to "invest" $100 which is paid to the initial recruiter. In order to make his or her money back, the new recruit must recruit more people under him or her, each of whom will also have to invest $100. If the recruit gets 10 more people to invest, this person will make $900 with just a $100 investment.

The 10 new people become recruiters and each one is in turn required to enlist an additional 10 people, resulting in a total of 100 more people. Each of those 100 new recruits is also obligated to pay $100 to the person who recruited him or her; recruiters get a profit of all of the money received minus the initial $100 paid to the person who recruited them. The process continues until the base of the pyramid is no longer strong enough to support the upper structure (meaning there are no more recruits). (From pyramid schemes to envelope stuffing, there are a lot of scams masquerading as legitimate part-time work.

The problem is that the scheme cannot go on forever because there is a finite number of people who can join the scheme (even if all the people in the world join). People are deceived into believing that by giving money they will make more money ("with an investment of just $100, you will receive $900 in return"). But no wealth has been created; no product has been sold; no investment has been made; and no service has been provided.
The fraud lies in the fact that it is impossible for the cycle to sustain itself, so people will lose their money somewhere down the line. Those who are most vulnerable are those towards the bottom of the pyramid, where it becomes impossible to recruit the number of people required to pay off the previous layer of recruiters. This kind of fraud is illegal in the Unites States and most countries throughout the world. It is estimated that 90% of people who get involved in a pyramid scheme will lose their money."

"Together at the top, like a PYRAMID..."

The History of Multi-Level Marketing

"1934 - Carl Rehnborg started the California Vitamin Corporation selling what today are known as vitamin supplements. In 1939 the company changed its name to Nutrilite Products Company, Inc.

1945 - Nutrilite contracted with Mytinger & Casselberry to become the exclusive American distributor of Nutrilite products. Mytinger & Casselberry created the first documented MLM compensation plan. It worked like this: A Nutrilite distributor bought his supplies at a 35% discount. (Ex: A distributor bought a box of vitamins for $13 and then sold them for $20 = $7.00 profit.)

To encourage the distributor to sell more, Nutrilite paid an extra monthly bonus of 25% on the total sales. 20 customers x $13.00 (wholesale value) = $260 x 25% =$65.00 profit.

Once the distributor proved that he could get 25 customers he was allowed to become a DIRECT distributor - which meant that he could find others who wanted to sell the Nutrilite products and then they would buy their products from him. In essence, once he proved that he could get customers he was “promoted” and allowed to find other distributors and to train them to get customers. As an incentive to train his distributors well, once he and his distributors amassed 150 customers, he received an additional 2% of the total sales volume.

This is not a pyramid - it’s a quota-based system of management. Those who sold the most boxes of vitamins got a higher reward than those who sold little. The MLM compensation plan was simply an extension of the Fuller Brush Company rewarding production. With MLM (Network Marketing) , the company could motivate a sales person to not only sell more products, but to train others to sell more products as well.

1945 - Earl Tupper created a line of flexible, lightweight plastic containers with tight-sealing lids. He started selling his products through conventional retail outlets, but realized the products needed demonstration. Earl Tupper then teamed up with Brownie Wise (formerly with Stanley Home Products) and launched Tupperware Party Plan, now a world-wide billion-dollar company operating in 40 countries.

1949 - Rich DeVos and Jay Van Andel (high school buddies and business partners) returned from military service and became distributors for Nutrilite vitamin supplements in 1950. After a brief dilemma with Nutrilite in 1959, the two abandoned ship and formed the Amway Corporation. In 1972 Amway Corporation acquired Nutrilite.

1956 - Dr. Forrest Shaklee developed a method of extracting minerals from vegetables and used MLM (Network Marketing) to distribute his products.

1963 - Mary Kay Ash creates Mary Kay Cosmetics. By 1996, company sales were in excess of 2 billion dollars.

1975 - The FTC (Federal Trade Commission) filed suit against Amway corporation for operating a pyramid scheme.

1979 - An administrative law judge ruled that Amway’s multi-level-marketing program was a legitimate business opportunity, as opposed to a pyramid scheme."

Conclusion:

So we can therefore define MLM or Network Marketing as a "system by which a parent company distributes its services or products through a network of independent business people." Then these people in turn "...sponsor other people to help them distribute the product or services. This people-helping-people process may continue through one or more LEVELS of earnings." (David Roller, "How To Make Big Money In Multi-Level Marketing", 1989 Prentice Hall, Inc., page 3.)

Happy Networking to everyone! God bless and ADVANCED MERRY CHRISTMAS!

It's Not About The Money

"It's not about the money, money, money..."

I'm slowly starting to see and understand that Life is really not about Money. So long have we debated about this OBJECT, this PAPER, which is SO HIGHLY OVERRATED, but is actually just a Promissory Note, payable by the Government of the Philippines.

In other words, that paper you are holding is just a medium to allow faster and easier exchange of products and/or services. Everyone acquire this paper when you/he/she perform a service to an employer, or as a profit/compensation after helping move products in a business.

Sabi ng iba: "Money is the root of all evil", at sagot naman ng karamihan, "Mali, THE LOVE OF MONEY is the root of all evil!" May pagkakaiba nga ba?

Whether you love or hate money, when you develop a NEED for it, trouble is waiting in the corner. Wow, how could such a simple Paper Note cause so much problem in our lives?

IF IT IS REALLY NOT ABOUT MONEY, THEN WHAT IS LIFE ALL ABOUT?

Let me use the Judo technique to answer that last question, as if you were the one who threw that question to me.

What do you think is the morale lesson of the movie "Pursuit of Happyness" ni Will Smith?

Let's finish this topic right now by picking up the Book of Life, the First Aid Kit of Life. All of Life's Answers are inside this Book. The Bible of course. Get one and open it in Matthew chapter six, verse 33:

"Seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you..."

So what is Life really about? I think you already know by now.

Proverbs 31:10-31, The Wife of Noble Character. Yes, babae ang bida dyan. And yes, may pera pa ding involved dyan. Pero basahin mo uli:

10 A wife of noble character who can find?
She is worth far more than rubies.
11 Her husband has full confidence in her
and lacks nothing of value.
12 She brings him good, not harm,
all the days of her life.
13 She selects wool and flax
and works with eager hands.
14 She is like the merchant ships,
bringing her food from afar.
15 She gets up while it is still night;
she provides food for her family
and portions for her female servants.
16 She considers a field and buys it;
out of her earnings she plants a vineyard.
17 She sets about her work vigorously;
her arms are strong for her tasks.
18 She sees that her trading is profitable,
and her lamp does not go out at night.
19 In her hand she holds the distaff
and grasps the spindle with her fingers.
20 She opens her arms to the poor
and extends her hands to the needy.
21 When it snows, she has no fear for her household;
for all of them are clothed in scarlet.
22 She makes coverings for her bed;
she is clothed in fine linen and purple.
23 Her husband is respected at the city gate,
where he takes his seat among the elders of the land.
24 She makes linen garments and sells them,
and supplies the merchants with sashes.
25 She is clothed with strength and dignity;
she can laugh at the days to come.
26 She speaks with wisdom,
and faithful instruction is on her tongue.
27 She watches over the affairs of her household
and does not eat the bread of idleness.
28 Her children arise and call her blessed;
her husband also, and he praises her:
29 “Many women do noble things,
but you surpass them all.”
30 Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting;
but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.
31 Honor her for all that her hands have done,
and let her works bring her praise at the city gate.

In short, life is about giving VALUE, to as many people as possible.

Take it from Zig Ziglar himself:
"You will get all you want in life if you help enough other people get what they want."

How can I be VALUABLE kung ako mismo ay kapos sa PERA?"

Simple answer: You are looking at everything from a REVERSED perspective or point of view. It's should actually be this way:

All outward materializations of Success (money, cars, properties, businesses, doodads, etc.) are only the manifestations of WHO YOU ARE INSIDE, your VALUE to the world.

This is what Todd Duncan is explaining in his book High Trust Selling. The Law of the Iceberg states: "The truest measure of your success is invisible to your clients." In short: OUTSIDE-IN. It should be: INSIDE-OUT.

"Often Men Only See The Tip of the Iceberg"

More on giving VALUE to others on my next blogs. But I would like to share that powerful truth to you personally and for free. Visit me in my office during our free coachings.

Feel free to leave comments below and like or follow my blog. More power to you, and your MLM business!

The Journey Of Men

I remember one day while i was busy using my laptop, reading ebooks and watching videos about MLM Business. When I was typing about a subject for my blog, my wife saw me very serious so she asked me, "Anong gawa mo? Why di ka pa din naghahanap ng trabaho?"

I shouted back at her: "Wag ka maingay, nag-bubusiness ako!"

Hahahaha, am i really doing business? Home Based Business? Online business? Eh wala nga akong internet connection sa bahay!

Am I?

To answer that question, we need a little background about the story of the "Journey Of Men". And I will start by using the Bible as the basis for Human Origin, because I DO NOT ACCEPT THE THEORY OF EVOLUTION AS BASIS FOR HUMAN EXISTENCE. No need for me to apologize.

When Adam sinned, the whole earth (the ground, or the soil) was cursed and no longer yielded an ABUNDANCE of crops and fruits. The earth ceased to be a PARADISE.

God said to Adam: "All your life you will struggle to scratch a living from it (the earth)... ALL YOUR LIFE YOU WILL SWEAT TO PRODUCE FOOD, UNTIL YOUR DYING DAY..."

So, the AGRICULTURAL AGE started:

Adam - learned how to "cultivate" the ground
Cain - farmer
Abel - shepherd
Jabal - became the first of the herdsmen who live in tents (Nomads).
Tubal-Cain - first to work with metal,  forging instruments of bronze and iron.
Nimrod - heroic warrior, mighty hunter, he built an empire.

Transition of Agricultural to INDUSTRIAL AGE:

Egypt reached its Golden Age and became a World Power because of the Agricultural Advantage, made possible by the Nile River. Power then started  to move from Territorial, or a Land Ownership; to Financial, or Business/Factory Ownership. Before, he who has the Land has the Power. He who have the most territory or land boundary have the influence or control. This is the basic reason for wars, conquering other territories, land grabbing, or territorial intrusion (happening until today, regarding the issue of the ownership of the Spratlys).

KNOWLEDGE IS POWER

And then people started to rebel against Monarchy or kingly authority. Republic became the new system of government, wherein people has a voice or input into national decisions. Democracy was also developed, wherein the majority of the people wins. The best example would be the United States breaking away from England's control. People saw education as a means to Succeed. Good education allowed people to be employed and earn substantial income.

Employment was seen as the answer to man's "Pursuit of happiness". It is very hard to strive for business ownership back then. Capitalism was only for those with the MONEY. "He who has the Gold has the Power."

Or is it?

I am not sure about that today. Ever since Bill Gates of Microsoft, and more recently Mark Zuckerberg of Facebook entered the world scene,  everything is not as it seemed. Robert Kiyosaki call this present Age as the INFORMATION AGE. He who has the Information, has the POWER.

I am not sure how to fully capitalize this power, but I do believe I am now starting to learn to take advantage of this Internet phenomenon. So I might say, I do am doing business at home...

Target Market: RED HOT Market (The Correct Market to Tap)

Last time I explained about how to differentiate your prospects into your COLD Market and Warm Market (just click on those words to read my previous blogs). Now, let us continue to learn more about the term TARGET MARKET, a term that is really alien to NETWORK MARKETING here in the Philippines.

Honestly, the first time I heard that term, it made me sizzle in anger, because I felt it was just a "SOSY" term,."Uy Target Market daw, Sosyal!". :)

It happened when someone was advising me to use this "Target Market" term in my Network Marketing business, so that I can customize how I present it to them. Since I don't know anything about it, I dismissed it at once. I thought to myself: "Pa target target market pa sya, pare-pareho lang naman yun! Pa social lang sya, porke nakapagtapos ka sa UP!"

But to that person, I would like to thank you for introducing that term to me. It took me more than TEN YEARS to finally understand that term TARGET MARKET and how to finally apply it in my MLM business.

To fully understand Target Marketing, we can use temperatures to describe the three types of people or prospects for our business. COLD - for people who don't care about our opportunity, WARM - for people who CARE FOR US, but may or may not care for our opportunity, and RED HOT - for those people that are really READY and WILLING to join YOUR opportunity.

"Work SMART instead of Working HARD"

Before I continue, I would just like to quote this a powerful truth statement by Ann Sieg:

"MLM is perfect for EVERYONE, but not everyone is PERFECT for MLM."

Or simply, not everyone will be interested in MLM. Some people even hate Network Marketing. They are what we call "NEGA", or negative about our business.

I know. MLM is the best business ever. And I know too, that everyone NEED to learn and start to engage in an MLM business. If we could just rehabilitate the image of Multi-Level Marketing or Network Marketing here in the Philippines, everyone's perception of MLM will change, and they will become more open-minded about our business.

But have you ever thought or analyzed why people's mindset about MLM is NEGATIVE?

I have. Try to list down the reasons why, then you will have an idea WHO are responsible for the other people's negative perception. You will be shocked to discover, that THE PEOPLE RESPONSIBLE, ARE NETWORKERS themselves, YOU AND ME.

But that is a subject for another time. What we will be discussing is the TRUTH. Specifically, the correct people or prospects that we SHOULD be tapping. And believe me, they are a BURNING RED HOT MARKET, hungry, craving, SEEKING, wanting, and LOOKING for YOU!

So let go of that mindset that says: "EVERYONE IS YOUR PROSPECT", or that teaching, homework, project, or first step of your business that trainers EMPHASIZE on us:

"LIST DOWN your 100 to 200 PROSPECT NAMES LIST."

Because, even after you have successfully sorted them out, they are still under your WARM market, if all of them already KNOW you.

If you have read my previous blog about this Target Market series, you understood that you can MELT those COLD PEOPLE so they become WARM by befriending them.

But, take note, unless your WARM Market are really for MLM or Network Marketing Business, you can never HEAT them up to the point that they become your RED HOT Market.

Know that sometimes by heating up the wrong people, you will instead lose them, and they might even become COLDER to you and your opportunity, COLDER than when you have first started with them.

Do you know that apart from your COLD and WARM Market, there is already a RED HOT, even BURNING Hot Market out there? And yes I assure you they definitely do exist. I promise, you will "SHIT BRICKS" when you understand and find out who they are.

I know you are very much eager to learn about this RED HOT, BURNING Market subject. But sorry I really CANNOT EXPOSE them HERE in this blog.

That information is too valuable to be broadcasted here. I believe there is a proper place and time for us to gather and for me to tell you WHO THEY REALLY ARE. Don't worry, I will still give that information to you for FREE.

"As in HOT na HOT sila sa Opportunity mo."

Send me an email at: paulobaldemor@gmail.com so I can get in touch with you.

Thank you and CONGRATULATIONS for being a leader, for taking the INITIATIVE, and for SEEKING OUT the TRUTH about our MLM business.

TARGET MARKET: The WARM Market

Last time I introduced the COLD Market as the first place where we look for prospects in our Network Marketing Business here in the Philippines. We learned that The COLD Market is very hard to penetrate because these people are strangers, and most of the time these people are ICY COLD to the opportunity we are offering.

They are very busy, pre-occupied, indifferent, and critical to whatever we are offering, for one simple reason. They DON'T KNOW YOU! And as we all know, we cannot TRUST people we do not KNOW.

Though sometimes COLD marketing still works  (very rarely), those people we tap using COLD Marketing are always clueless, ignorant and "mislead" by our "part-time job" offers. Thus, we can conclude, that COLD marketing is a very inefficient prospecting method.

"Ice Breaker"

The WARM market on the other hand are directed definitely not on strangers, but to our close circle of influence. They are composed of our immediate family members, then very close friends, and then our friendly neighbors, church mates, business contacts or work mates, friends in the community, "ninongs" and "ninangs", and so forth. In other words, "KKK" :).

They are termed "WARM" market because in a way they have some concern, a listening ear, respect, "utang na loob", "pakikisama", or in other words, they are more ready to consider what we offer, in comparison to those people we do not immediately know.

The usual problem that happen when we present our MLM business opportunity to these people in our WARM market, is when we expect them to trust or buy from us, because we are in a way related.

As Ann Sieg emphasized:

"Just because someone is your friend (or family member for that matter) does not constitute A GOOD ENOUGH REASON for them to buy from you."

If you haven't noticed yet, people do not join an MLM Company, because of its Imposing Company Profile, or the Million Dollar Compensation Plan, or even the Most Breakthrough, Unique, Miraculous, and One-Of-A-Kind Product. People join an MLM Company for only one reason, and one reason alone.

They join YOU, and YOUR GAMEPLAN, or your "HOW TO" System.

In essence, you have a higher batting average or chance of selling or sponsoring these WARM Market people to your Network Marketing business, if and only if, they TRUST YOU, and a much better probability, if YOU CAN SHOW THEM HOW THEY CAN DO THE BUSINESS EFFECTIVELY.

Have you seen the difference between the COLD market and the WARM market? There is a better batting average when you talk to people in your WARM market, because they KNOW and TRUST YOU, and YOU SHOWED them a way HOW TO DO the business effectively.

Does this mean we can't tap strangers, or people that belong to the COLD market? What would then happen when I have exhausted all the people in my WARM market?

Simple! you can still tap people in the COLD market, but you need to convert them to first to be on your WARM market.

How? By remembering that when You talk to strangers, you need to make friends with them, ask for their business problems, then and only then can you OFFER your Business SOLUTION!

This is in contrast to plain old COLD marketing, wherein we immediately offer our Network Marketing opportunities, instead of offering a solution, to uncovered problems.

Coming soon, the Third type of the Target Market, and the best Market to tap in your MLM Business here in the Philippines, it is the burning, RED HOT Market. Don't forget to like or follow my blog!

TARGET MARKET: The COLD Market

In the Philippine Multi-Level Marketing, and in any other businesses as well, we have three kinds (or temparatures) of market. The first is the COLD market, meaning strangers, i.e. people we dont know. That is why we have the term COLD calling, the sales strategy of calling people randomly, or from a list, and sometimes, even from the phone directory list.

Cold marketing is very very ineffective because this is unproffessional, and strangers or passers-by are UNTARGETED people. I experienced this firsthand when I decided to give out flyers for the first time in my life.

Right then and there, I really cannot comprehend why my flyering is not working. Now i know. Can you guess what those people who saw me giving out flyers were thinking?

Ouch. The truth really hurts. For my part, I know that I have to swallow my pride if i really wanted to be successful. After months and months of struggling in network marketing, I decided to give out my all. I decided to distribute flyers I myself designed and made.

But you know what? Even though i am really shouting: "Come do business with me!", The message that i was REALLY sending out was this:

"Sir/Mam, napakagandang business opportunity ito, ipapaliwanag ko po. Pagkatapos, bigyan mo ako ng pang-registration dito, papalitan ko ng products, at iba pa. CONGRATULATIONS! Dalawa na tayong mamimigay ng flyers, tara, mag-negosyo na tayo dito!!!"

Conclusion:

We need to understand the correct way of MARKETING. We should restore that word "MARKET" in networking, so it becomes Network MARKETing as it really is. And one way of doing that is by understanding the concept of TARGET MARKET.

Stay tuned for the second and third kind of market. The WARM Market and the RED HOT Market. Thanks for Reading!

Word of Mouth

An effective "Word of Mouth" should always come from genuine third party people only. Let me give you an example. I frequently ride a bus when going to Manila. Before, I just wait near the road for passing buses instead of going to the terminal thus saving me time and money. One day I needed to go to Manila. A bus arrived but it was not bound for Cubao.

Bus Conductor: "Sakay na ho kayo. Walang bus na Cubao ngayon!"

Me: "Weh?" (yeah right)

(after an hour)

Another Bus Conductor (3rd bus still bound to Lawton Buendia): "Sakay na ho kayo. Walang bus na Cubao ngayon!"

Me: "Napansin ko nga..." (sakay sa bus, standing with other passengers kc wala na available seats). "Bakit ho pala walang bus cubao ngayon?"

Morale of the story? People tend to be skeptics when a person gives advice that may or may not be true, because the person giving the advice will directly or indirectly benefit. Even though the person is genuinely concerned, it is hard to trust him because there is money involved...
